Read and listen to talk radio. I have found that talk radio is very stimulating and can really make you think. I think that excersize can keep you pretty sharp as well. Plus it really improves your mood.
References :
As with any other part of the body the mind gets dull with non-use. I personally recommend chess (but this may not appeal to everyone). However, if all you do is sit around playing thinking games all day your body will suffer (and therefore the mind will also suffer from getting inefficient nourishment). Therefore a regimen of exercise is necessary. I tell all my chess students to exercise regularly. As a Tournament Chess competitor I know what it's like to be mentallly and physically exhausted, that type of chess is taxing mentally and physically, both should be in good condition.
References :
I've heard that exercise helps as well as learning new things. If you are right handed, do things with your left hand. Try crossword puzzles.

What you should NOT do is sit at home and whine and cry about how lonely you are. Get off your butt and DO SOMETHING!!
